Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you deliver?

We deliver throughout the UK, free of charge to most addresses. We also deliver to many countries in the EEC and worldwide – we have shipped as far as Japan. We can quote world wide prices if you let us know exactly what you want, your country and local area code. We can deliver to some European destinations for around £250. For the USA we would advise sourcing a mattress locally to reduce the delivery costs. We can deliver many bed bases to some US destinations for approx £150. For export to non-EEC countries you can deduct the VAT (17.5%) from our prices.

Are they flat packed?

All our bases are flat packed for delivery. They have been designed for easy self assembly – clear instructions are supplied. Approximate assembly times are indicated on the price list. Most of our mattresses are vacuum packed, rolled and packed into a box for very easy handling. Once unpacked they open out to full size.

Are your beds made from solid timber?

Yes, we don't use veneered materials, only solid wood.

How long will a futon mattress last?

This is probably the most difficult question we get asked. There are many cheap futons on the market which can give the product a bad name. We use the finest quality materials to make very comfy futons that will last.

We have customers who change their futon after 4 or 5 years and others who use their futon for 10 years or longer. Futons become firmer over time and the lifespan will be different for different people. It depends on many factors including:
your weight: the lighter you are the longer any mattress will last. It's important with a futon to get a thickness appropriate to your weight;
your profile: if you sleep on your side your mattress has to accommodate the shape of your hips and shoulders. For this reason there is some degree of gender difference – men tend to like firmer mattresses than women. If you sleep on you back your profile is flatter and a firmer mattress is more
acceptable;
how well you look after your futon: the cotton in your futon will absorb moisture from your body – rolling and turning your futon once a week will air it and restore the loft of the fibres. The more you do this the longer your futon will last;
the type of beds slats: sprung slats potentially increase the futon lifespan because they 'give' slightly under your weight.

Do I have to air my futon, roll it up and turn it over?

Yes, yes and yes! Your futon is mostly cotton which will absorb moisture from your body under a quilt at night. If it's your regular bed, once a week you should roll it up (like a Swiss roll) in the morning then unroll it and turn it over at night.

Do you recondition old futons?

This is one of the few questions to which we answer, no, I'm sorry we don't.

How do I order?

You can either order on-line or by email, phone, fax, letter or in person.

Can I wait to view the goods before my final payment?

We require full payment before the goods are despatched; please see returns policy for further information.

What if the goods are damaged on arrival?

This is very unlikely but if there is obvious damage you should refuse to accept the damaged package and ask the carrier to return it to us. Even if the packaging appears to be in good condition we would ask you to unpack and inspect the delivery and report any damage within three days. We cannot accept any claims for transit damage after that time.

How long will my order take?

When you place the order we'll give you an approximate delivery date. When your order is ready we'll phone you to arrange a definite delivery date.

Lead times depend on the order, the following is a guide to lead times for different products. However, some items are held in stock and may be available more quickly – let us know what you want.

  • Rio, Fiji, Tokyo 2 weeks
  • Other pine bases 3-4 weeks
  • Hardwood bases: 3-5 weeks
  • Futon mattresses: 2 weeks
  • Other mattresses: usually 1 week, depending on stock levels

Can it be quicker?

We offer hundreds of different options so mostly we make to order. There's a small chance we may have what you want in stock so let us know what you're looking for.

Should I come to the shop?

We get visitors from all over the UK every week; you'll be able to take your time trying the mattresses and you'll see the different models and be able to judge the quality. There's also our range of lighting, coffee tables, accessories and gifts for you to see and we'll be happy to help and advise you face to face.

Are they guaranteed?

We do not issue a formal guarantee but we will attend to any problem arising from unsatisfactory performance, construction or materials.

What’s the price in US dollars?

That will depend on the exchange rate. Currently you need to multiply the price in £'s by 2 to get the approximate dollar price.

Can you make a bespoke design for me?

Although we are able to customise many of our designs, we do not generally make bespoke furniture - although it may be possible depending on your requirements. We also work closely with other local cabinet makers who may be able to make a bespoke piece for you.
